For the Florida and Texas football teams, what once seemed like a marquee matchup may now be a testament of survival.

Texas host Florida this weekend in an SEC showdown. At the beginning of this month, both Texas and Florida were ranked among the top 10 teams in the Associated Press’ poll. But Texas (4-1, 1-1) and Florida (4-2, 2-2) were both beaten on Saturday, and the Longhorns stayed in the top 10 at No. 7 while the Gators went unranked in the AP’s newest poll Sunday.

1. First season with Jon Sumrall hasn’t been completely smooth

After four unsuccessful seasons with Billy Napier, the first year of the Jon Sumrall era has featured highs and lows. Hired after leading Tulane to last year’s College Football Playoff, Sumrall got Florida off to a 4-0 start that included a 24-point win over then-No. 4 Ole Miss. The Gators, though, were beaten handily by both Missouri and South Carolina. Sumrall owns a 47-14 record over five seasons at Troy, Tulane and Florida.

2. Florida RB Jadan Baugh has been a problem for Texas

The Florida run game is paced by Jadan Baugh, who has rushed 110 times for 672 yards and 12 touchdowns. Baugh, who considered transferring to Texas this offseason after the Longhorns hired former UF running backs coach Jabbar Juluke, has had prior success against Texas. He rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown during a 2024 trip to Austin and had 107 yards and another score in last year’s meeting.

3. After 2025 debut, Dallas Wilson is UF’s top target

Last year, receiver Dallas Wilson made his collegiate debut in Florida’s 29-21 win over Texas. The former four-star recruit introduced himself with six catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns. One year later, he leads the Gators with 26 receptions, 376 receiving yards and three touchdown catches. Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith is the only receiver to top 100 receiving yards against Texas this season.

4. Myles Graham following father’s footsteps at Florida

A Gainesville, Fla. product and son of the fourth-leading rusher in Florida’s history, junior linebacker Myles Graham is leading the Gators on defense. Through six games, he has recorded 41 tackles and a fumble recovery. He’s coming off a two-sack outing against South Carolina.

5. How often has Texas played Florida?

Texas and Florida don’t have much of a rivalry as this will be just the sixth game in a series in which the Longhorns lead 3-1-1. But after not playing between 1941 and 2023, Texas and Florida are set to meet for the third straight season. They have split their past two meetings with each team successfully defending their home field.

James Street. Earl Campbell. Vince Young. Doak Walker. Others include Duke Carlisle, Robert Griffin III, John David Crowe, and Davey O’Brien. I would have included John Football, but his behavior disqualifies him.
