Mac Davis statue approved by city council, looks to honor musician’s legacy

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – For those who may be too young to know the kind of man Mac Davis was, Lubbock pastor and musician Jeff McCreight can help fill in the gaps.

According McCreight, Mac Davis, he felt that “God had given him the gift of songwriting,” McCreight said. “He always had a guitar in reach and we would talk about life and love and the world. He would strum a few chords and out would come lyrics that would totally capture everything that we were feeling about what we were talking about.”

Davis first made a name for himself as a song writer, helping create magic in the studio with artists including Elvis Presley. In the 1970’s, the world got hooked on Davis’ music, as he secured four top 15 hits on the Billboard charts.

McCreight and Davis first met in 2004, when McCreight’s band helped Davis perform a benefit show at the Rawls golf course. Over years of friendship, there was always one thing that McCreight noticed that stuck with him about Davis.

“I loved the fact that Mac always appreciated where he was from,” McCreight said.

City council recently approved a statue to be built at the traffic circle of Mac Davis Lane and Avenue x.

Using $400,000 from the North Overton tax increment financing zone, it looks to show younger folks Davis is more than just a street sign you see in the city.

“As the generations come and people that have lived before pass and the memories pass, young people can drive by that statue and look at it and say ‘who was Mac Davis?” Davis said, “and that opens the door for us to bring back the legacy and the artistry that man was gifted to create.”

“Davis certainly didn’t shy away from bringing up where he grew up and this looks to be the perfect symbol for just how much of an impact he made to Lubbock.

“That’s why he wanted to be buried here and he kept that commitment,” McCreight said. “(He sand) when I die, bury me in Lubbock, Texas in my jeans. That’s exactly what happened.”
