Near-freezing temperatures are on their way to Texas this week, and parts of the Lone Star State could start to see the impacts as early as Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service said the cold front is expected to reach the Texas Panhandle late Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, then move into North Texas late Thursday and into Friday, bringing rain and much lower temperatures to much of the state.

Though the timing of the front varies by region, NWS said Texans can expect widespread rain over the next three days across most of the panhandle area, starting Wednesday.

“The cold front across the plains is forecast to move over our area late Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. This will usher in cooler air along with the clouds and precipitation,” the National Weather Service Amarillo’s Area Forecast Discussion reads.

The region is already seeing severe weather and scattered storms on Tuesday, with ping-pong-sized hail and a possible isolated tornado.

The cold front will move into the North Texas area between Thursday night and Friday, bringing windy conditions and noticeably cooler weekend temperatures, according to the NWS Dallas/Fort Worth. Isolated and scattered storms are expected across the western portions of the region, with a 20-60% chance of rain.
