DALLAS (KDAF) — Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Fort Worth have been identified as the top five cities in Texas with the most rule-bending drivers, according to a recent survey by New Jersey-based criminal defense firm Brett Rosen Law.

The firm surveyed 3,056 motorists across major U.S. cities to highlight where drivers are most inclined to bend or ignore traffic laws when compliance becomes inconvenient.

The survey examined common traffic violations that drivers commit for convenience, including double-parking, using road shoulders to skip traffic jams, blocking bicycle lanes, cutting across turn-only lanes, making illegal U-turns and stopping with hazard lights activated.

Researchers found that congestion across major highway networks and interchange decisions frequently prompt motorists to prioritize personal time over traffic regulations.

Dallas ranked first in Texas for drivers bending traffic rules. The city’s dense freeway network carries commuters between downtown, the suburbs and regional business centers. On these routes, drivers frequently engage in last-second lane cuts or remain in faster lanes until an exit is almost gone. On city streets, drivers also block lanes for vehicle pickups.

Houston placed second on the Texas list. The city’s sprawling freeway system includes major corridors such as I-10, I-45 and I-69, alongside complex networks of frontage roads, ramps and interchanges. When congestion builds, some motorists drive on the shoulder or cross several lanes at once to avoid missing their intended exit.

Austin ranked third among Texas cities. Traffic congestion along major north-south routes, including I-35, MoPac (Loop one) and U.S. 183, leads some motorists to treat turn lanes as passing lanes or execute multi-lane cuts to reach exit ramps.

San Antonio came in fourth in the state. Interstates I-10 and I-35 cross the city alongside Loop 410, where the Texas Department of Transportation is investing in safety and traffic improvements on parts of I-410 and U.S. 281 near the airport. Driver violations on these busy roads include pushing through closing gaps in traffic and riding in incorrect lanes before forcing back into line.

Fort Worth rounded out the top five. In the fast-growing city, drivers navigating major interstates and wide main roads frequently cut into exit lines or use restricted lanes to pass slower traffic near busy ramps and interchanges.
