LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas Tech University’s Department of Animal & Food Sciences is looking for producers who already plan to graze failed cotton fields to take part in a research study.
The study examines how beef cows use failed cotton, including what they select, what they leave behind, and how the quality of available forage changes as grazing continues.
Researchers aim to collect data to help producers make decisions about how many grazing days a field may provide and the quality of that forage over time.
What researchers are measuring
The study will measure biomass available to grazing cows, what cows select among leaf, boll, lint, seed and stem, nutrient quality over time, grazing days a field may provide, and simple field measurements that could help estimate grazing potential.
How to participate
Producers interested in participating can contact Dr. Whitney Crossland at Texas Tech University. Cattle and field management will remain under producer supervision throughout the collaboration.
