Two men were arrested early Wednesday after allegedly stealing items from an abandoned Fort Worth school and causing water damage to the building, police said.

Officers responded to Charles E. Nash Elementary School at 401 Samuels Ave. about 1:30 a.m. after someone reported that two people were inside, according to police. The school permanently closed in June, and the district is planning to sell the property.

The arriving officers saw two people exit the back of the building. They ignored the officers’ commands to stop and took off running, police said. They were detained after a short foot chase and arrested. Two backpacks containing tools and a tablet were recovered.

The suspects were booked into the Fort Worth City Jail and face charges of burglary of a building, evading arrest or detention, and criminal mischief, according to police records.
