EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Keeping a busy stretch of Pelicano Drive clean has become part of the workday routine for iRGO Roofing, one of the first groups to sign up for the City of El Paso’s Adopt-a-Street program.
Through the program, businesses, families and other groups can adopt a stretch of road and help keep it clean.
iRGO Roofing adopted a stretch of Pelicano Drive between George Dieter and Lee Trevino, next to its business.
“We’ve had the privilege of cleaning up and adopting this street,” said Julian Leyva, iRGO Roofing’s operating manager.
Leyva said the company learned about the initiative during a city meeting and decided to get involved.
“So, we saw this initiative in a meeting that was conducted with the city,” Leyva said.

“We felt we needed to get involved with our community and truly help expand community involvement within small businesses.”
For Leyva, that means focusing on the sidewalk and street the business uses every day.
“What we’re responsible for is ideally just the sidewalk area where there’s trash, litter and weeds,” Leyva said.
“We’ve always wanted to do something to involve us with the city and what better way than to clean a street that we drive on every single day to get to the office.”
Kelly Leyva with the city’s Streets and Maintenance Department said El Paso launched the Adopt-a-Street program in September to help beautify streets, and she said the response was immediate.
“We expected a few applications to start, but when we got 37 over the first weekend, we were very excited to see how much the community wants to be involved,” she said.
“A lot of the businesses are excited to promote their business and show the pride of their street, of keeping it clean, and the pride of keeping the city clean as a whole.”
Streets across El Paso are still available for adoption, and the city is encouraging businesses, families and organizations to sign up.

Each participant takes responsibility for a 1-mile stretch for two years, with at least four cleanups required every year.
The city provides trash bags, gloves, safety vests and cleanup tools.
Volunteers can drop off bagged trash at a city collection station or arrange for it to be picked up.
“Let’s jump on board and help clean the city, one adopt-a-street program at a time,” Julian Leyva said.
