Cool mornings open up to record breaking heat

  • November 12, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – After a few cool mornings, the afternoon highs have been unseasonably warm across the South Plains. In fact, yesterday, Lubbock airport recorded 86 degrees, breaking the record of 82 set back in 1956.

Today will look slightly different as a weak cold front eased through Tuesday night, but it’s not exactly a game changer. Highs today will still be about 10 degrees above normal with highs this afternoon reaching the 70s with light winds and plenty of sunshine.

Overnight lows will be cool but it doesn’t look like we’ll be in any danger of freezing temperatures across the region.

Lows will hover around the 40s across most of the area.

By Thursday and Friday, a strong upper ridge parks overhead and takes charge. This will result in another day of potentially record-breaking temperatures. Afternoon highs will climb into the mid to upper 80s, possibly flirting with record territory.

That, paired with dry air and breezy southwest winds, and we could see elevated fire danger both days.

That high pressure is acting like a lid on the atmosphere keeping skies clear, air sinking, and cold fronts locked up to the north. It’s great for your outdoor plans, not so great if you’re hoping to see any meaningful moisture soon.

Saturday isn’t expected to bring much relief. Forecast models had hinted at a weekend cooldown, but that pattern’s slowing down. Expect another unseasonably warm weekend.

A potentially change could arrive by Sunday, though the details are still fuzzy.

One model brings a quick-moving system that barely brushes us, while another keeps it hanging closer, which could mean a few light showers and cooler air.

Either way, expect temperatures to trend back toward normal as we start next week.
