HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Harris County will have 193 fewer Election Day polling locations in the 2026 midterms than in the 2022 midterms, according to a new ABC News analysis of Election Day polling sites.
The analysis found there were 782 locations across 133 zip codes during the 2022 midterms. This year there are 589.
Political expert and lecturer Nancy Sims said the decline has a reason.
“Fewer people are turning up on election day to cast ballots, and they base where you’re going to vote the next time on how many people voted the last time,” Sims said.
A closer look at the county data shows polling locations have decreased in some zip codes but increased in others.
In the 77091 zip code in Acres Homes, there were eight polling locations in 2022. This November, there are four. In the 77081 zip code in Gulfton, there were six election day polling locations in 2022. This year there are three. In the 77346 zip code in Atascocita, 13 locations will drop to 10. In the 77587 zip code in South Houston, three locations will drop to one.
Meanwhile, some areas saw increases. The 77373 zip code in Spring went from nine sites to 13, and the 77433 zip code in Cypress went from 13 election day polling locations to 16 this November.
Sims said setting polling locations is complex.
“It’s a highly complicated and orchestrated process to identify and execute these polling locations, and then they have to have enough workers and supplies to manage that location,” Sims said.
Sims said more people are turning to early voting, which reduces the need for election-day polling sites.
Early voting begins Monday.
