EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Strong overnight winds left a West El Paso home damaged after a large tree was uprooted and crashed onto the house, leaving the homeowner and her neighbor dealing with cleanup, repairs and insurance concerns.

Cindy Limbird, who lives near Mora and Arboles, said she was awakened around 3:30 a.m. when she heard a loud noise.

“It was about 3:30 this morning, and I heard a big boom,” Limbird said. “I saw a shadow, and so I looked up and realized that the tree in my neighbor’s yard had fallen into mine– onto my house.”

The tree was uprooted, tearing through the concrete sidewalk before falling onto the roof of Limbird’s home.

The impact left a hole in the roof and damaged a spare bedroom.

Limbird said the winds grew increasingly strong overnight, but she did not expect them to become severe enough to bring down the tree.

“It got strong and strong, and I thought, you know, this is weird. But I never expected the winds to be this high,” she said.

Nikki Karmsrush, who lives next door to Limbird, said she was notified early Friday morning that the tree from her yard had fallen onto her neighbor’s home.

“It was a fun morning waking up to this,” Karmsrush said. “My neighbor had called around 5:40 that our tree had fallen onto her house.”

Karmsrush said her family had previously trimmed dead limbs from the tree.

“I came out here at three in the morning, and this tree was rocking and rolling,” Karmsrush said. “We never were that concerned about it.”

Despite the damage, both women said they were grateful no one was injured.

“It was kinda scary. I’m just happy she was not in that bedroom because it’s destroyed,” Karmsrush said.

Tree service crews began cutting the fallen tree into sections to remove it from the roof and allow repairs to begin.

Limbird said her insurance adjuster was expected to assess the damage within the next 24 hours.

Tree removal and cleanup could continue through the weekend.
