SAN MARCOS, Texas — A fox found on the Texas State University campus tested positive for rabies, the city of San Marcos said.

Maintenance workers captured the fox Oct. 14 near East Sessom Drive and Pleasant Street and turned it over to San Marcos Animal Control. No known exposures to the animal have been reported.

The city advises people not to touch wild animals and to report sick animals or physical contact with wildlife to Animal Services at 512-805-2655.

Pet owners should keep their animals vaccinated against rabies. Vaccination is required by state law and city ordinance. Information about low-cost rabies vaccinations is available at sanmarcostx.gov/pethelp.

Rabies is a virus that can infect mammals, including wildlife, pets and people. It is most commonly spread through bites or scratches from an infected animal. Anyone who may have had physical contact with a rabid animal should seek medical care promptly to determine whether post-exposure treatment is needed.
