HOUSTON – A man who lives at The Athena apartments in southwest Houston helped first responders get people out of their units as fire started to spread Friday afternoon.
From our KPRC 2 Tower camera, you could see thick gray and then white smoke billowing across the skyline.
Anthony DeVeaux, one of the tenants, told us he first smelled smoke and then got a knock on the door shortly after 2 p.m.
“When I opened the door, you could just see flames, about 10 units totally engulfed,” he said.
DeVeaux says he then jumped in to help, going door to door to get other tenants out.
The Houston Fire Department confirmed the complex, located at 10101 Forum Park Drive between Bissonnet Street and Sugar Branch Drive, was on fire.
They said no one had been injured.
This story is developing and KPRC 2 Reporter Sandy Torres is at the scene. We’ll keep you updated with new information as it comes in.
