In a sea of Boomer Jack’s and Outback, Hulen neighbors have a new family-owned small business to support.
Turmeric opened on Sunday south of I-20 off of Bryant Irvin Road, serving authentic Indian food. This is the first restaurant for owner Sesha Sakhamuri and her family. She decided to take a leap of faith to follow her passion of cooking after years as a principal engineer.
“When we started thinking about opening a restaurant, we were drawn to Fort Worth because of its strong sense of community and family-friendly atmosphere,” Sakhamuri told the Star-Telegram.
She hopes Turmeric can be a place for customers to try something new or find comfort from flavors they already grew up loving.

For beginners, the Sakhamuri family suggests starting with the butter chicken or tikka masala, as these are the two most popular Indian dishes in the U.S.
A must for anyone is the sweet and addictive garlic naan. And it never hurts to try a mango lassi, a yogurt smoothie with a pinch of cardamom.
The restaurant has also put a twist on the traditional naan by offering naan pizza and naan tacos.
The naan pizza has a naan crust with the creamy tomato gravy used in the restaurant’s curry, melted cheese and choice of protein on top. The naan taco is similar with a spiced meat filling, onion cilantro and mint chutney.
Note that dishes ask for a spice level. If you are not bold with spice, go with mild. Medium will make your nose run some. Spicy is for aficionados.
Another good option is biryani rice. This slow-cooked dish has layers of rice, meat and aromatic spices. Protein options include paneer, chicken, and a pan-fried biryani with goat or lamb.
The menu varies from $10 to $20 per dish. For two people, you could get away with splitting an appetizer, an entree and a side of naan, and you might still have leftovers.
