HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Fire crews are working to extinguish a fire at a mulch yard in southeast Houston on Saturday morning, according to authorities.

The Houston Fire Department said it received the call about the fire at about 8 a.m., located on Haynesworth Lane near Beltway 8.

Authorities said it is unclear how big the fire is, and as of 8:30 a.m., the fire had not been contained.

In an update at about 11:50 a.m., HFD said that crews may be there for at least 12 hours, but added that they do not expect the fire to spread.

Authorities described the incident as very large mulch piles burning. HFD explained that crews needed to tear mulch piles apart, and when they sprayed water on them, it would just bounce off the top.

Officials added that the main issue is water supply, which they explained was a distance away from the site due to the layout of the water lines.

HFD said there are no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is still being determined, authorities said.

Houston TranStar cameras captured images of the smoke from the blaze near Beltway 8.

This is a developing story. Eyewitness News is continuing to gather facts.
