EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — It’s been a Borderland tradition and mainstay for nearly a half century.

For 42 years, the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Country Fair and Dachshund Stampede has entertained community members from the El Paso, Canutillo, Anthony and Las Cruces areas.

The event returns for another year from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7050 McNutt Road in La Union, New Mexico.

Admission is a can of food for dogs, cats or humans which will go to the local Food Bank, organizers said.

The Country Fair offers what they bill as the “world’s best smoked brisket,” homemade goodies, a bake sale and dozens of vendors with a wide variety of arts, crafts and wares.

And of course, the event features the Great Dachshund Stampede and doggie costume contest.

This year, there will be special races for all dogs.

In support of spay and neuter programs, a portion of all race entry fees will be donated to the Animal Rescue League of El Paso.

Father Maurice Ryan Lee will offer his blessing of the animals at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Organizers said they want to show people around their church, talk about its history and show off the stained glass windows at the church.
