BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – An annual carnival-style event returned to raise cancer awareness while also having fun.
Texas A&M’s Century Men’s Society hosted its annual Watermelon Bash, bringing the community together for a day of activities and fundraising.
The Watermelon Bash has been held since 2019 as a carnival-style event centered around watermelons. This year’s activities included a watermelon smash, tug-of-war, watermelon eating contests and slip-and-slides.
Century Cancer Fund philanthropy logistics officer Cade Fraley said the cause is extra special for him.
“I was a counselor for Camp Kesem this summer, and we probably have eight of our kids here,” Fraley remarked. “They, of course, come for free, so it’s really awesome to be able to have like that personal impact and be able to put on an event like this.”
This year’s bash drew in more than 1,000 participants. Dailey Poland said it was his first time attending and that he enjoyed having fun while also giving back to the community.
“This feels amazing because I’m having a great time, but I still feel like my contributions are going back towards the community, you know, like paying it forward,” Poland said.
All the proceeds from the Watermelon Bash will go towards Camp Kesem, which is a summer camp for kids whose parents have cancer.
