Widening work on Farm-to-Market Road 549 between State Highway 276 and State Highway 205 is underway with completion expected in January 2029.

The project includes changes to the intersection of FM 549 and Farm-to-Market Road 1139 that will affect how drivers travel between the roads and SH 205.

The intersection will be realigned to meet at a 90-degree angle, giving drivers a better view of approaching traffic. Currently, motorists stopped on FM 1139 and waiting to turn onto FM 549 must look over their shoulders to check for traffic coming from the east.

Once the work is complete, a traffic signal study can be requested to determine whether the intersection qualifies for a traffic light.

The new layout also will change the route for drivers traveling between FM 1139 and SH 205.

Drivers heading north from FM 1139 toward SH 205 will turn left onto FM 549, then turn right at the new traffic signal at SH 205.

Motorists traveling south on SH 205 who want to reach FM 1139 will turn left at the new signal at FM 549, continue to FM 1139 and turn right.

The arrangement will be similar to intersections along Farm-to-Market Road 740 in Heath and Rockwall. Traffic counts from 2024 show FM 740 carries two to three times as much traffic as FM 549.
