BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Local parents are opening their mailboxes to find a pamphlet offering Texas students transgender and LGBTQ+ resources. But the organization featured on it says they didn’t send it.
The mailers have been turning up in Texas mailboxes for days, each one addressed simply to “Students Of The [Last Name] Family.”
The flyer, titled the “Texas Trans & LGBTQ+ Student Resource Guide,” details student legal rights and how to find support outside the family. It appears to have been sent by the Transgender Education Network of Texas, or TENT. But a lot about it doesn’t add up.
The return address closely resembles the organization’s real one. But a Google Maps search of the address listed on the envelope drops the pin in the middle of a road, and none of the nearby buildings match.
TENT addressed the mailers on its website saying:
We are aware of text messages and now physical mailers that have been circulated concerning TENT that appear to have been issued by or on behalf of the organization.
These text messages and mailers were not authored, authorized, approved, or distributed by TENT and are not affiliated with our organization. The texts do not represent the official position or communications of the organization.
We will continue to monitor the situation and remain committed to our organizational values of unequivocal support for trans Texans, their families, and their loved ones. Trans Texans belong here. This is our home and we’re not going anywhere.
Meanwhile, the group named on the envelope “Texas Transgender Student Union LLC” doesn’t appear to exist beyond these mailers. Public records show it was filed as an LLC in Wyoming on Sept. 2.
Who is running the LLC, and who is paying for the pamphlets, remains unknown.
