EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Downtown Annex Building will be renamed to honor a local and state leader, recognizing his decades of public service and contributions to El Paso.

El Paso County will host an unveiling ceremony to officially rename the Downtown Annex Building to the Jose R. Rodriguez County Annex on Friday, Oct. 23.

The building renaming project, including the signage, was funded through donations from community members in recognition of Rodriguez.

According to the County, Rodriguez began his elected public office career in 1993 as El Paso County Attorney. He served in the role for 17 years before representing District 29 in the Texas Senate from 2011 to 2021.

“Throughout his nearly three decades of public service, he advocated for public safety, education, health care, economic development and environmental protection, while working to protect vulnerable populations, strengthen legal services and improve the quality of life for residents across the El Paso region,” the County said.

Commissioners Court approved the annex renaming on July 27, and the building houses the El Paso County Attorney’s Office and County Auditors.

“The renaming of the building serves as a lasting recognition of Rodriguez’s contributions to El Paso County and his commitment to serving the community. The dedication also holds special significance as the building is home to the County Attorney’s Office, where Rodriguez served for nearly two decades,” the County said.
