Who is running in Greater Houston in the November election? A guide to the 2026 local ballot

  • October 22, 2026

HOUSTON – The November election will reach well beyond the races at the top of the ballot. Across Greater Houston, voters will choose county officials, judges, city leaders, school trustees and district board members. Depending on where they live, they may also decide questions about school funding, public services, taxes and city policy.

This guide covers local elections in Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery and Waller counties. County offices and local trial courts are organized alongside city, school district, appraisal district and other special district elections. Separate tables explain local ballot propositions. Some elections appear throughout a county; others are limited to voters who live within a particular city, precinct or district.

Check your county’s sample ballot to confirm which races and candidates you can vote for. Republican, Democratic and Independent candidates are identified by a R, D and I. An unexpired-term contest fills the remainder of an existing term. Races with one candidate listed have one named candidate in the official records reviewed.

District judges hold state judicial offices and are included here because they serve local trial courts. Local board and city elections are listed without party labels when the official ballot does not identify a party. District boundaries may cross county lines, so the same election can appear in more than one county’s section. Proposition summaries describe the questions in plain language; check the official ballot for the full wording and financial terms.

Friendswood ISD’s cancellation order identifies three unopposed trustees declared elected: Beau Egert (Position 5), Robert Dale Kirkpatrick Jr. (Position 6) and David Montz (Position 7). Its November trustee election was canceled.

Galveston County WCID 12 also canceled its November bond election. The previously proposed $7.05 million bond question is excluded from the active proposition table above.

The Galveston Central Appraisal District’s Sept. 9 official meeting notice acknowledges cancellation of its November election. Its three at-large board positions are therefore excluded from the active ballot races in this guide.

A certified write-in candidate has qualified to run without having their name printed among the ballot choices. Voters must write in the candidate’s name using their county’s voting instructions.

Harris County’s official list includes these county-office candidates:

Office soughtCandidateHarris County JudgeVince Duncan; Marianne “Yan” HessHarris County Commissioner, Precinct 4Michelle Gwinn

Check the official certification and your county’s voting instructions for how write-in votes are handled. A name discussed online is not automatically a certified write-in candidacy.

Use your individual sample ballot to identify the commissioner and justice of the peace contests you can vote in, along with any city, school district or special district elections. A county’s combined sample ballot may include races from several precincts; your ballot will include only the contests tied to your registered address.

County election websites provide sample ballots, and the Secretary of State’s November election page links to certified candidate information.

Early voting runs Oct. 19-30, and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
