SAN ANTONIO – A booming area of town is having trouble keeping up with all the growth.

Now, TxDOT is trying to catch up, looking at plans to widen an already busy stretch of road in Far West Bexar County.

As more homes and businesses go up across 211 and Potranco, some drivers are sharing roads that were built for a very different time.

What would take a few minutes to get home has doubled.

It was really quiet here when I moved here about two years ago, there was like nothing here,” said Daniel Sentano, Potranco resident. “Through the years, it just got more clustered.

TxDOT is now looking at expanding the roadway from two lanes to six lanes to help ease congestion.

But with construction comes lane closures, detours, and longer travel times.

“Let’s say three or four years ago,” said Katelyn Mallot, Potranco resident. “It would take me five minutes, but if it’s not bad and it’s almost never not bad it takes me like 15.”

“If you’re at the stoplight you might be stopped all the way back there and it could take three cycles to get through the light.”

The concerns go beyond traffic.

Crash data from TxDOT shows 213 reported crashes on 211 and CR 381 from 2024 to now, including one fatality.

Yet another reason TxDOT held an open house tonight.

Some are supportive and some aren’t but we need to do it so that we can improve safety and mobility,” TxDOT spokeswoman Tanya Brown said. “And at the end of the day this is going to be better for the community and provide a lot more lane miles for people to travel on that corridor.

TxDOT says the proposed expansion is just that — it’s still a plan.

There’s no exact timetable for when it would start or how long it would take, but officials say 2028 to 2030 could be a possibility.
