LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Students at Miller Elementary had the chance to learn about career options beyond common childhood answers like princess, rock star or actress during a recent event at the school.
Third grader Eli Morman said he wants to be a firefighter. Classmate Avery Newton said she wants to be a teacher.
Lacy Simon, a counselor at Miller Elementary, said events like this help students consider careers they may not have known about.
“I think that sometimes they get into a little bubble and they’re like, I just want to be this or that. But this is like a whole new world for them and it’s just pretty awesome,” Simon said.
Even though the third graders had already named their dream jobs, they still visited other career stations during the event.
Morman said a member of UMC’s Aero Transport team caught his interest, despite his interest in firefighting.
“They’re showing us what they do and how they serve our community. This day that he helps people child care. He helps people rescue shelter that if they’re really safe, they get to fly on the helicopter really fast to go safe home,” Morman said.
Simon said students sometimes mirror the careers they see their parents doing each day. She said events like this can help students consider other options.
