AUSTIN, Texas — A man accused of a brutal attack inside Austin’s Central Library is now facing a murder charge months after the victim died from his injuries.

Daniel Vasquez remains in the Travis County Jail, where his bond is set at $300,000. Authorities upgraded his charge from aggravated assault to murder seven months after the attack, after autopsy results were released.

According to the arrest affidavit, Vasquez attacked 62-year-old Alonzo Mabry without provocation while both men were seated at public computers at the downtown Austin Public Library. Vasquez is accused of first hitting Mabry with his elbow and then repeatedly stomping on his head, causing severe bleeding in Mabry’s brain.

Vasquez was initially charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. Mabry never recovered and died in hospice care on June 12.

On Oct. 14, Austin police received the autopsy results. The medical examiner determined Mabry died from complications of blunt force trauma to the head and ruled the death a homicide. Police told CBS Austin detectives were waiting for those results before moving forward with a murder charge.

The case has renewed attention on safety at the library.

“Public safety is the number one priority of Austin Public Library. We want to make sure that our spaces are safe and welcoming to everyone. And so although situations like this one that happened on Wednesday are rare, we do take them very seriously,” said Baylor Johnson, the public information officer at the Austin Public Library, in March shortly after the attack.

Austin Public Library told CBS Austin it has added security staff and has sheriff’s personnel at the building through a partnership with Travis County. The library also said employees have devices to contact security immediately and panic buttons to call for emergency help. It said it has improved how it tracks security incidents and is working more closely with Austin police.

Crime data for the 78701 ZIP code, where the library is located, shows 61 aggravated assault arrests and three murder arrests, not including this case.
