NEW ORLEANS – The LSU New Orleans Privateers pushed the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders deep into each set but were defeated 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-22) on Thursday evening at the Human Performance Center.

The Privateers were in the throws of each set, but late mini runs in each set by the Islanders did the job as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi snapped a three-match losing skid with the victory.

LSU New Orleans leveled the first set score, a set that was competitive throughout when Rylie Hallman scored a point on a kill to tie it at 17-17. That’s when the Islanders went on a 7-2 run that saw kills from four different players and two Madison Morrow service aces.

Though the Privateers saved the first two attempts at set point, Kenna Buchanan scored a kill to close out the first set in the Islanders’ favor.

Set two saw a similar run a little earlier. Near the technical timeout, the Privateers were trailing 14-13. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi went on to score on five of the next six rallies to open their lead to five. The two teams traded rallies from there to the finish as the Islanders took a 2-0 lead into the third set.

LSU New Orleans had 10 digs by the 19th point in the set after averaging 10 digs over the first two sets. Nyakuak Lual was the focal point defensively of a spirited defensive rally that led to an Ava Frerman kill and an 8-5 lead for the Privateers.

The Islanders steadily got back to even terms and the two teams were tied at 20-20 after an Ania Anderson kill. That’s when the Islanders hit a crucial four-point spurt which was aided by two points from Kaitlyn Aleshire on a kill and a block.

LSU New Orleans saved the first two match point attempts, but an attack error by the Privateers sealed the victory for the Islanders.

Six Islanders had at least five kills on the night. Buchanan finished with 13 kills and 11 digs. Virginia Van Der Werff had 37 assists and a team-high 14 digs. Erin Herrmann added eight kills in 10 attempts.

INSIDE THE BOX
Armie Hall registered a .440 attack percentage with 12 kills and added four blocks. Ryan Williams was close to a double-double with nine kills and a team co-leading 10 digs. Lual was a part of seven of the team’s eight blocks. Vladana Ristic finished with 10 digs.
