Connor Hellebuyck’s suspension may have been seen as an advantage by the other nine teams the Winnipeg Jets have faced this season.
But once Stuart Skinner was named Thursday’s starter, any advantage for Dallas went out the window.
The Stars (6-3-1) had to battle all night against Skinner, who played a key role in knocking them out of two recent playoffs and finished with 35 saves Thursday, to steal a 3-2 win in overtime.

Roope Hintz scored the game-tying goal while Dallas had a 6-on-5 advantage with two minutes left in regulation before scoring again on a breakaway in overtime to secure the win. Jason Robertson blocked a shot at one end, allowing Miro Heiskanen to find Hintz up ice for his second goal of the game.

“I like the way we just stuck with it,” Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said. “Our top guys made a nice play.”
Skinner had an 8-3-0 record with a 1.95 goals-against average and 0.923 save percentage against the Stars in the playoffs during his time as the Edmonton Oilers’ goalie. His regular season numbers before Thursday against Dallas weren’t nearly as good, with a 3-6-1 record, 3.73 goals-against average and 0.858 save percentage.
But with Hellebuyck suspended until Friday for failing to report to training camp after requesting a trade, Skinner has become the Jets’ No. 1 netminder and has performed quite well in that role.

“He made some great saves,” said Gulutzan, who coached Skinner on those Oilers teams. “Some of those power play saves could’ve broken the game open when it was 1-0. When a goalie’s playing good, you’ve just got to continually stay at it.”
The Stars had their chances all night — 5-on-5, on the power play and in high-danger situations.
Wyatt Johnston was able to capitalize on a delayed penalty, finally scoring his first goal of the season over a diving Skinner 1:17 into the second period. Jason Robertson had the secondary assist, which was his 500th career point. He reached that milestone faster than any player in Dallas history and seventh-fastest among all U.S. born players in NHL history.
But Winnipeg then answered with two goals less than two minutes apart around the midway point of the second period.
Shortly after a Dallas power play expired, Gabriel Vilardi scraped a puck of Jake Oettinger’s pads and finished around the net. Moments later, the Stars failed to clear the puck out of their own zone, and Neal Pionk set up Kyle Connor — another player who’s had plenty of success against the Stars — for the second goal.

Oettinger faced 19 shots, far fewer than Skinner, saving 17.

But Hintz put the team on his back late with the two consecutive goals. It was similar to how Mikko Rantanen did so on Tuesday in the overtime win against Boston, recording a hat trick and the overtime winner. Rantanen assisted on both regulation goals Thursday.
“We think that we’re just one pass off or one shot off,” Robertson said. “If we can make it, I think a lot more opens up, and I think we’re gonna find it.”

The Stars couldn’t score on two power play opportunities. Neither could Winnipeg, as Dallas killed four Jets power plays in their second consecutive game without top penalty killer Esa Lindell, who is out for a week with a lower body injury.
The Stars still have four games remaining on the homestand. Their next will be against former Stars head coach Pete DeBoer and his New York Islanders in DeBoer’s first return to American Airlines Center since he was fired in June 2025.
