Halloween is almost here, and that means Lubbock parents are preparing for one of the great annual battles: convincing their kids that wearing a jacket over a Halloween costume isn’t the end of the world.

Of course, this is West Texas, where you can leave the house wearing shorts and need a winter coat by the time you get home.

So, what can we expect for Halloween weekend in Lubbock this year?

Well, there are a few things worth knowing before you send the kids out in search of enough candy to keep your dentist employed through Thanksgiving.

First, some good news for everybody planning Halloween festivities.

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year.

That means most kids won’t have to worry about getting up early for school the next morning, and parents won’t have to negotiate bedtime with a seven-year-old who’s just consumed three pounds of chocolate.

Friday, October 30, should also be a popular night for Halloween parties, haunted attractions and other festivities around Lubbock.

But what about the weather?

How Cold Will It Be in Lubbock on Halloween?

I don’t have a verified, detailed forecast for October 30th and 31st just yet, but historical weather patterns give us a pretty good idea of what late October typically looks like in Lubbock.

Afternoon temperatures generally reach the upper 60s to lower 70s this time of year.

That sounds pretty comfortable, especially if you’re attending an outdoor Halloween event during the afternoon.

However, once the sun goes down, things tend to cool off considerably.

Evening temperatures often fall into the 50s, with readings potentially dipping into the 40s later in the night.

So, while your little Batman might be perfectly comfortable leaving the house and walking around the neighborhood, but he could be looking for the Bat-heater by the time he gets home.

Again, those temperatures are based on seasonal averages, not a confirmed forecast for Halloween weekend.

If you’ve lived in Lubbock for more than about fifteen minutes, you know the temperature is only part of the equation.

There’s also the wind.

A 55-degree evening might sound perfectly pleasant until a stiff West Texas breeze comes rolling across the neighborhood.

Suddenly, that adorable little princess costume doesn’t seem quite as practical as it did in the living room.

And if your kid is dressing as a ghost, you might want to make sure that sheet is securely attached.

Otherwise, you could end up chasing Casper halfway down the block.

Will It Rain on Halloween in Lubbock?

That’s the big question I can’t answer with confidence just yet.

There isn’t a verified rain forecast available in the information I have for October 30th and 31st.

Late October can bring cold fronts and rapidly changing conditions to the South Plains, so it’s worth checking the forecast again as Halloween gets closer.

The National Weather Service office in Lubbock is an excellent resource for updates on temperatures, wind and any potential rain.

If you’re getting the kids ready for Halloween, I’d recommend planning for cool weather even if the afternoon turns out to be beautiful.

Consider putting a lightweight layer underneath costumes, especially for younger children who will be outside for a while.

Comfortable shoes are also a good idea, since trick-or-treating usually involves a lot more walking than kids anticipate.

And don’t forget something reflective or a flashlight so drivers can see everybody after dark.

Of course, the biggest concern for most kids won’t be the temperature.

It’ll be whether the house at the end of the street is still handing out full-size candy bars.
