SAN ANTONIO – A man is facing a federal drug charge after authorities say they recovered more than 300 grams of cocaine at his West Side restaurant and home on Thursday.
A criminal complaint, provided by a U.S. Immigration Enforcement and Customs spokesperson, states Ronald Garibay faces a drug possession with intent to distribute charge. The federal document was signed by a Homeland Security Investigations special agent on Friday.
Garibay, 54, was arrested around 6 a.m. at his home in the 300 block of Alicia Avenue. HSI agents, San Antonio police and the department’s high-intensity drug trafficking area unit responded to the narcotics call.
The special agent said Garibay was seen walking into a shed in his backyard to grab a gallon-sized bag with a white powdery substance inside. The federal document states he threw the bag over his fence.
Authorities tested the bag for drugs and the special agent said the powder was cocaine. A total of 295.7 grams of cocaine was taken form Garibay’s home, according to the complaint.
Garibay spoke with authorities and told them he paid $2,000 for the drugs on Monday after a unidentified man came to his restaurant off Culebra Road to ask if he “needed anything.” According to the complaint, the unidentified man later gave him cocaine.
Garibay also told the special agent he’s sold cocaine before. The complaint said he hid cocaine near a light pole in his backyard.
“He stated that, when selling cocaine, he would retrieve a scale from the nightstand in his bedroom and use it to weigh the substance before distribution,” the special agent wrote in the complaint.
Garibay allowed authorities to search his restaurant RJ’s Snack Shack, located down the street from St. Mary’s University, to continue the investigation.
Bexar County property records indicate Garibay is listed as the owner of the restaurant.
During the search, investigators recovered an additional 46.8 grams of cocaine from RJ’s Snack Shack.
HSI authorities told KSAT that Garibay is expected to appear in federal court Friday.
