  • October 24, 2026

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Texas voters will elect a new Attorney General Nov. 3 to serve as the state’s top lawyer.

The Attorney General is the official lawyer for the state of Texas, charged with defending Texas laws and the Texas Constitution.

The office represents the state in litigation and approves public bond issues, serves as counsel to state boards and agencies, issues opinions on request and defends state agencies and employees, according to the Office of the Texas Attorney General.

The Attorney General runs child support enforcement and collects court-ordered child support.

The office administers the Crime Victims’ Compensation Program, according to the Office of the Texas Attorney General, and enforces consumer laws through the Consumer Protection Division, according to the office.

No law license is required to hold the office according to the Texas Secretary of State’s qualifications guide. The term is four years.

Whoever wins will be new, since current Attorney General Ken Paxton is running for U.S. Senate.

Seeking the job are Libertarian Tom Oxford, Democrat Nathan Johnson and Republican Mayes Middleton.

Early voting runs Oct. 19-30. For registration and polling information, visit VoteTexas.gov.
