A Fort Worth police officer died Wednesday after suffering a medical emergency while on duty the day before, the department said.

Officer Brian Gentry had been with the department since 2004 and was assigned to its fugitive unit as a task force officer with the U.S. Marshals Service.

Police said Gentry, 53, experienced a medical emergency Tuesday while working and went to a local hospital emergency room. He was admitted to the intensive care unit and died hours later Wednesday.

The department didn’t release additional details about the medical emergency or Gentry’s cause of death.

“The loss of a member of our department is deeply personal,” Chief Eddie Garcia said in a statement. “Brian was one of our own and his passing will be felt by the many people who had the privilege of working alongside him and calling him a friend.”

Garcia said the department would support Gentry’s family and fellow officers. Police didn’t announce funeral arrangements as of Wednesday afternoon. Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker ordered city flags to be flown at half-staff following the officer’s death.
