The late September report found H-E-B’s grocery store visits grew 6% year over year between January and August 2026, a massive overhaul compared to the broader industry, which grew just 0.9% during the same reporting period. The data findings also revealed H-E-B shoppers linger longer in stores and are more than twice as likely as other grocery shoppers to visit H-E-B four or more times each month.

What’s driving H-E-B’s mass appeal? It comes, in part, as the San Antonio-based grocer continues its rampant expansion into the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, with more North Texas stores coming online in that region during the reporting period. Those latest newcomers are one slice of statewide growth trends, from a Forney store opening back in February up north to yet another San Antonio-area storefront earmarked for late 2026.

Alongside its growth, H-E-B’s product curation is largely responsible for the business’ Texas appeal. The chain offers local assortments for individual stores and market areas, while also championing local involvement and community engagement across Texas. That, coupled by rare feat amenities such as True Texas BBQ restaurants, also separate the Texas chain from its other industry competitors, Placer.Ai’s analysis noted.

“H-E-B continues to earn its place among grocery ‘unicorns’ – chains whose focused approach helps them deliver both quality and value,” the report read in part. “Budget-conscious shoppers are still making grocery trips, and the Texas grocer is giving them reasons to choose its stores, stay longer, and return more often.”
