HOW IT HAPPENED

The opening set stayed even through 9-9, with Karisa Martin delivering two early kills for the Mavericks while North Ala. countered with points from Olivia Fenoff and Kendall Buckley. Martin’s kill broke the tie, and Samantha Glenn served the Mavericks through six straight points as Hana Aiana had consecutive kills and Evyn Snook added three kills to make it 16-9. North Ala. pulled to 16-11 on a Mavericks attack error and Fenoff’s ace, but UTA moved back ahead 20-12 with help from a Snook kill, a North Ala. attack error and a Snook ace. Lucy Tricco and Dixie Nessl added late kills, and Snook scored the final two UTA points to close a 25-16 set win.

Snook accounted for five early kills as the Mavericks and the Lions moved through a tight start, with Eliana Collins’ kill from Tricco bringing the set even at 13-13. North Ala. moved ahead 18-14 behind kills from Phoebe Reyes Fortunato and Olivia Fenoff and a pair of UTA attack errors. UTA cut it to 18-17 with three straight points, two on blocks by Nessl and Martin, before the Lions pushed back to 21-18. Snook’s late kill helped UTA pull even at 22-22, but UNA scored the next two points, and after a service error made it 24-23, Fenoff closed the set with a kill for a 25-23 North Ala. win.

The Mavericks were still down 13-6 when Martin had a kill, Evyn Snook added a kill and Camryn McMinn served an ace during a stretch that brought the Mavericks within 14-13. After the Lions pushed back ahead 16-13, the Mavericks tied the set at 16-16 on a Snook kill and later pulled even again at 19-19 after a McMinn kill and a UNA attack error. Dixie Nessl’s kill kept the Mavericks within 21-20, but North Ala. scored the final four points, finishing the set with a Kinslee McGowan ace for a 25-20 decision.

After UNA moved in front 2-1, UTA used kills from Evyn Snook, Hana Aiana and Martin plus service aces from Samantha Glenn and Lily Hopkins to go ahead 6-3. North Ala. answered with five straight points to move ahead 8-6, but a Jenna Kolosta attack error and Aiana’s kill from Tricco brought the set back to 8-8.
