The San Jose Earthquakes saw their unbeaten streak snapped at nine games Saturday night when FC Dallas broke a scoreless duel by erupting for three goals in the match’s final 12 minutes.

Petar Musa scored twice in a five-minute span for Dallas, which earned a shutout as former Earthquakes goalkeeper Daniel helped prevent his old teammates from finding the net.

Daniel, who was traded to Dallas in July, came up with one of the game’s best defensive plays in the 28th minute while turning back Ousseni Bouda’s scoring bid.

Bouda had a one-on-one opportunity in transition for the Quakes after Beau Leroux stole a pass and lifted a longball that was hauled in by Bouda. But before Boudda could cut back and shoot in front of the six-yard box, Daniel swiped the ball away.

“Bouda had that breakaway. Give Daniel a lot of credit. Heck of a save by Daniel,” said Quakes coach Bruce Arena. “You know, you got to finish your chances, and we knew it was going to be a low-scoring game, a tight game, and it turned out to be that.

“So not being able to convert a quality chance makes a difference in the game.”

The save was Daniel’s only official one but it enabled him to earn his fourth clean sheet in his eighth start for Dallas (15-7-9), which began the day in third place in the West. Daniel had five shutouts in his 15 starts with the Quakes this season.

Despite the loss, San Jose (13-9-9) remained in fourth place in the Western Conference, a spot that would ensure the Quakes would have home-field advantage in the first round of the MLS playoffs.

Musa ended Daniel’s scoreless duel with San Jose’s Angus Gunn when he used assists from Bernard Kamungo and Santiago Moreno to score in the 83rd minute.

Musa added his 21st goal of the season — second only to the 25 of Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi — in the 88th minute on a penalty kick. Musa took the penalty kick after Kaick Ferreira was fouled by San Jose defender Paul Marie.

Moreno capped the scoring when he used an assist from Ramiro Benetti in the fourth minute of stoppage time to notch his fourth goal along with his third assist.

San Jose, which has just three matches remaining in the regular season, will next host the Colorado Rapids at PayPal Park on Wednesday.
