EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to begin work on a resolution calling for Camp East Montana to close.

Council members want the resolution to cite reports of detainees being denied basic rights at the ICE facility on Fort Bliss.

The resolution would also address public health concerns and questions about transparency in how taxpayer money is used.

“But this is affecting our city in profound ways, right?” Council member Josh Acevedo said. “If you think about what’s happened there with measles, with TB, that’s a public health concern to the city of El Paso. The people that work there are living in our city, likely, many of them are living in our community. So if things like these are happening there, there’s very little oversight. There’s no transparency, there’s no accountability.”

The move follows the council’s request in March for a federal grand jury investigation into the three deaths at the facility.

The city manager and city attorney now have 30 days to bring the closure resolution back to council for a vote.
