A cold front is expected to bring cooler weather to most of Texas early next week, though its timing and effects will vary based on where you live.

Some Texans could see storms, while others may get a taste of significantly cooler weather, with lows dipping into the 40s. Here’s when to expect the front-and when to grab a jacket or umbrella.

Southeast Texas

After a warm and muggy weekend, forecasters expect a cold front will move into Southeast Texas early to mid-next week, according to the National Weather Service Houston-Galveston office.

“Timing, positioning, and details in regards to when its associated surface front will push through are somewhat fuzzy,” Houston forecasters wrote in their outlook Wednesday evening.

Eric Berger with Space City Weather anticipates the front will arrive sometime on Tuesday.

“By all accounts this one should have some staying power,” Berger wrote on Wednesday, adding that the front could bring thunderstorms. “After this we are going to see significantly cooler weather, with highs perhaps around 70 degrees and lows in the 50s or possibly even 40s for some inland locations.”

While details are still up in the air, Berger said it appears a significant pattern change is on the way and that cooler air should stick around through at least the following weekend.

North and Central Texas

The timing of arrival in North and Central Texas is still uncertain. Some models show it approaching Monday night, while others forecast it may not clear the region until late Tuesday, according to the NWS Dallas-Fort Worth office.

“Regardless of the timing of the cold front, medium range guidance is in alignment resolving scattered showers and thunderstorms along the front as it moves through North and Central Texas,” Dallas forecasters wrote in their outlook.

Lows could drop into the upper 50s and lower 60s in parts of the region. While storms are expected, widespread severe weather appears unlikely.

“Nonetheless, a narrow corridor…may materialize just ahead of the front depending on its timing through the region which may result in a few strong thunderstorms during the afternoon/evening hours (either Monday or Tuesday depending on how quickly this system moves towards the east),” Dallas forecasters wrote.

Texas Panhandle

A cold front is expected to push into the Texas Pnahandle on Monday, bringing strong winds in its wake, according to the NWS Amarillo office.

“Another wet period is setting up for Sunday night through Monday, with possible continuation into Tuesday pending the track of the upper low ejecting out of the southern Rockies,” Amarillo forecasters wrote in their outlook. There is notable model spread from Monday onward, but a trend toward cooler, wet and windy conditions early next week is noteworthy.”

Lows could drop into the low 40s early next week, according to the seven-day forecast.

A stronger weather system is expected to bring widespread rain to West Texas on Sunday with storms continuing into Monday, according to the NWS El Paso office.

“Temperatures also look to take a dip too on Tuesday behind the low with lowland highs in the upper 60s and low 70s,” El Paso forecasters wrote in their outlook.
