EL PASO, Tx., November 13, 2025: When the El Paso City Council proclaims November 18 as Eddie Guerrero Day, it won’t just be about honoring a pro wrestler — it’s really about recognizing a hometown kid who became a global icon.
Eduardo “Eddie” Guerrero grew up right here in El Paso, the youngest son of legendary wrestler Gory Guerrero. From his early days wrestling in the family ring to headlining arenas across the world, Eddie never stopped representing where he came from. Fans remember him for his charm, grit, and his famous mantra: “I lie, I cheat, I steal!” But they also remember his heart — a performer who could make you laugh one minute and cry the next.
As an El Paso kid, I still remember the chills that ran down my spine hearing the ring announcer’s voice boom through the TV:
“From El Paso, Texas…” and knowing the whole world was hearing it too. One night at the Don Haskins Center in 2003, Eddie defended the WWE United States Championship against a young John Cena — and retained his title in front of a roaring hometown crowd (by getting disqualified, of course). For many of us, that was one of the most legendary wrestling nights El Paso ever witnessed.
Eddie reached the peak of his career in 2004, defeating Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship in one of the most emotional matches in wrestling history. He passed away the following year at just 38 years old, but his legacy never faded.
Twenty years later, wrestling crowds around the world still erupt when his name is mentioned. Even now, Eddie’s influence echoes through the next generation — most visibly through “Dirty Dominik Mysterio,” one of WWE’s top stars and most-hated (and secretly loved) villains.
Dominik, the real-life son of Rey Mysterio, has leaned hard into Eddie’s legacy, using the signature Three Amigos suplex chain and the Frog Splash finisher in nearly every match. The resemblance doesn’t stop there — with his haircut, mustache, swagger, and ring presence, fans have started saying Dominik reminds them more of Eddie than his own dad.
Just recently on RAW, Rey mentioned Eddie during a promo, and Dominik fired back with, “Keep my father’s name out of your mouth!” — a callback to the legendary 2005 storyline where Eddie claimed to be Dominik’s biological father. The crowd went wild, not just for the drama, but because hearing the name Eddie Guerrero still hits deep. Twenty years later, just a mention of his name can make an arena explode.
Adding to the emotional full-circle moment: John Cena — the same man who battled Eddie in El Paso that unforgettable night — recently captured the Intercontinental Championship from Dominik Mysterio on RAW, in a match where both men clearly paid homage to Eddie, capping off what may be his final run before retirement. It’s poetic. The Greatest of All Time closing out his career while carrying a connection to two generations of Guerrero-Mysterio history.
Now, Eddie’s hometown is giving that love back. The El Paso City Council will hold a proclamation ceremony at 9 a.m. on November 18 at City Hall, officially declaring that date Eddie Guerrero Day. The effort was led by City Representative Deanna Maldonado-Rocha (District 3), who introduced the item to honor one of El Paso’s most beloved sons.
“The proclamation came about as an idea from an Eddie Guerrero fan,” Rocha said. “He reached out, and staff was able to work with him and receive approval from the mayor’s office. Eddie was proud to be from El Paso. He would come back and visit the kids in his old neighborhood. He was also able to overcome so much and be successful. I believe his life resonated with so many El Pasoans. Plus, he was a great wrestler with a lot of charisma. His comeback story was amazing.”
Eddie Guerrero Day will include a public gathering at City Hall, and fans are encouraged to attend in their favorite wrestling gear or Eddie Guerrero shirts.
Whether you grew up watching SmackDown! every week or you’re hearing his name for the first time, know this: Eddie Guerrero wasn’t just a wrestling superstar — he was a son of El Paso who became a symbol of pride for the entire world. Viva La Raza.
