EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A 31-year-old El Paso man, who for years stole vehicles, sold land and mobile homes he did not own and passed bad checks, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

According to the El Paso District Attorney’s office, Alex Montoya was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to:

Nine counts of theft of property valued at $2,500 to $30,000.Three counts of theft of property valued at $30,000 to $150,000. Two counts of forgery of a financial instrument.Tampering with a government record.

Also, Montoya’s probation for a prior conviction for evading arrest was revoked and he was given 10 years for that.

Montoya’s sentences will run concurrently.

The DA’s office elaborated on Montoya’s crimes, adding that the cars he would steal, he would sell them for scrap, sell fake land and mobile homes, and cash checks drawn on accounts with insufficient funds– all this from 2022 to 2026.

Following news of Montoya’s sentencing, DA James Montoya and El Paso County Attorney Christina Sanchez released the following statements:

“For years, Alex Montoya treated other people’s property as his own to sell, including their vehicles, their land and even their homes,” DA James Montoya said. “Every one of these cases represents a family or business that lost something they worked hard for. This sentence holds him accountable for the full scope of that harm, and it reflects what’s possible when our office, the County Attorney’s Office, and law enforcement agencies across the county work together.”

“Victims of deceptive business practices and people who receive checks they believe were knowingly written without sufficient funds should report the matter to law enforcement,” County Attorney Christina Sanchez said. “A police report gives investigators a starting point and can help authorities determine whether the conduct is part of a broader pattern. Keep any checks, contracts, receipts, messages, and payment records to support your report.”
