April’s Chinese Restaurant shocked its devoted San Antonio customers when the business boarded up its home on South Alamo Street and closed its doors. It quickly became clear that the local favorite would only be gone temporarily and would eventually return with a brand new look. Months later, those dedicated customers are still waiting.

Online chatter about April’s Chinese Restaurant brought the low-key Chinese eatery back onto MySA’s radar, so on Thursday, October 29, we stopped by the business to see what has been going on. It was lightly raining when we visited the site, but a team of workers were still trucking along to continue renovations.

Ryan Perry, a representative for MCS Marcus Contracting, was present at the property and told MySA that April’s Chinese Restaurant is indeed on track to open in the future, but the business has not provided an opening date. Based on the brief conversation with Perry and another employee, it appears that April’s is still a work in progress, and it will be at least a few more weeks before the renovations are completed.

From what could be seen, April’s Chinese Restaurant has already changed dramatically in its outward appearance, going from a jewel-toned building with a somewhat dated design to a sand-colored building with all-new fixtures, including stone cladding. MySA attempted to contact April’s directly by phone and a Facebook account that appears to be connected to the concept, but as of Thursday, we have not yet receive a response.
