Once again, a ribbon-cutting and groundbreaking event scheduled at I.B. Magee Jr. Beach Park in Port Aransas has been postponed.
It’s the second time the event has been postponed. Most recently, it had been scheduled for 10 a.m. today (Friday, Oct. 30), but officials this morning called it off due to the threat of rain. No new date has been announced. (Keep watching the South Jetty’s website and Facecbook page for updates.)
The event is to include two ribbon cuttings and a groundbreaking at the park.
One of the ribbon cuttings will be for a new boardwalk that recently was completed at the park.
The 2,500-foot boardwalk, which loops around a 1.5-acre storm water retention pond, includes three shaded kiosks.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held for a veterans’ memorial that will be built next to the boardwalk.
The veterans’ memorial project is being spearheaded by Brent Chesney, commissioner of Nueces County Precinct 4, which includes Port Aransas. The Nueces County Commissioners Court has approved $325,000 for the project.
The memorial is expected to include a 60-foot flagpole with an American flag; signs commemorating each branch of the service; pavers; lighting; low walls for sitting and reflecting; and a parking area.
A ribbon cutting is planned to commemorate remodeling of the concession area at Horace Caldwell Pier.
Work to install 30 new RV spaces at the park remains ongoing.
