FORT WORTH, Texas — Transit agency Trinity Metro has broken ground on a $270 million, 2.1-mile addition to its TEXRail commuter rail operation that will extend service south to Fort Worth’s Medical District.

The addition, expected to open in mid-2030, will extend the TEXRail route to 29.1 miles and 10 stations between Fort Worth’s Near Southside and DFW International Airport. The line’s current southernmost point is downtown’s former Texas & Pacific Station, an Art Deco skyscraper opened in 1931.

“Fort Worth is growing, and the decisions we make today will shape how people experience this city for generations,” Trinity Metro CEO Rich Andreski told more than 100 people during groundbreaking ceremonies. “The TEXRail Near Southside/Medical District extension and new station is an investment in our future.”

Land for the station site was donated by the Baylor Scott & White Health hospital system.

Funding for the project comes from several federal sources, as well as the North Central Texas Council of Governments’ Regional Transportation Council.

According to the news site Fort Worth Report, a separate passenger track will be built on the Fort Worth & Western Railroad right-of-way, thanks to a $6.1 million deal with the railroad.
