Governor Greg Abbott visits Lubbock ahead of midterm election day

  • October 31, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Hundreds were crammed inside The Funky Door, Friday, as Governor Greg Abbott, joined by Senator Charles Perry and Lubbock representative Carl Tepper, spoke about the importance of heading to the polls this election season.

“We want huge turnout among voters in Lubbock,” Abbott said. “Lubbock values are so important to our entire state, the Lubbock economy is important to the entire state. I’m here to, first off, thank all these people for voting, but also to get them to help us turn out the vote even more.”

Abbott started his speech touting millions of new jobs and safer communities since he was elected governor, but he also turned his attention to what’s at stake.

“What is at stake in this election? This election, like every other election, is a choice between two very different candidates,” Abbott said.

The governor mentioned his opponent, Gina Hinojosa, several times during the event. He claimed Hinojosa is against putting human traffickers behind bars, doesn’t think his border policy is right for Texas, and wants to raise the state’s property taxes, something we asked him to elaborate on shortly after the event concluded.

“We have detailed vote by vote by vote based on bill versus bill versus bill where she voted over 40 times for higher property taxes,” Abbott said. “She’s lying about it because she knows it’s hurting her campaign. Not only that she voted for higher property taxes, but also that she voted for an income tax in the state of Texas. The receipts are there. We cited the bills and the Texas House of Representatives that she voted for that shows that she repeatedly voted for higher property taxes in Texas.”

Abbott finished by saying the next generation needs to be at top of mind and focused on what it will take to, in his words, keep Texas affordable.

“Number one, you should never have a property tax increase without you getting to vote on it and require a two-thirds margin,” Abbott said. “Number two, we have got to stop these skyrocketing appraisal rates. Reduce them from 10% a year to no more than 3% a year. Lastly, it is not the responsibility of your homestead to fund education. That’s the state’s responsibility. We must stop using your homestead for that purpose. We must zero out and eliminate the school district property tax on homesteads for every home across the state of Texas.”
