According to San Antonio police, officers were called around 11 p.m. Aug. 2024, to a home on Division Avenue near South Flores Street for a welfare check. Family members had become concerned after a recent family violence incident and were unable to reach Stephanie.

Officers found Stephanie dead inside the home with more than 30 stab wounds. James Mendoza was also inside with self-inflicted wounds to his torso and wrists. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition and later taken into custody, police said.

Investigators determined Mendoza lured Stephanie to their former home and attacked her, according to the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney’s Office.
