The San Antonio Police Department is reminding drivers to plan safe rides as children and families head out for Halloween.

Last year,

two adults and a child

were trick-or-treating on the South Side when a driver later arrested on intoxication charges struck them. Police said a 61-year-old man hit a parked car, jumped a curb and struck the family on the sidewalk.

SAPD data shows officers responded to at least 63 DWI calls on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31 last year. In each of the past three years, officers also responded to more than 100 major crashes calls on Halloween, according to data provided to KSAT-TV.

“SAPD DWI Enforcement is seven days a week, year-round,” said SAPD spokesperson Camelia Juarez. “Adults who are planning to drink alcohol should plan their night ahead and consider a ride share or find a safe ride home.”

Driving safely

SAPD urges drivers to slow down and stay alert throughout Halloween weekend. Drivers should keep their headlights on, watch for children who may dart into the road and avoid distractions such as texting.

Ride-hailing options in San Antonio include Uber, Lyft and Waymo. Partygoers can reduce costs by splitting a ride with friends. Waymo says its autonomous ride-hailing service is available to the public in San Antonio.

The Local SATX operates free electric shuttles with routes through downtown, Pearl, River North and the Deco district. For route and stop details, visit The Local SATX website.

Trick-or-treating tips

Families and children who are trick-or-treating can follow a few safety tips to keep Halloween night from being full of frights.

Police advise trick-or-treaters to stay together in groups, use designated crosswalks and wear bright clothing or carry a flashlight to stay visible.

Parents and guardians should check candy before children eat it. Look for open or repackaged candy, and avoid homemade treats from anyone other than a trusted friend or family member.
