A former special education teacher at San Antonio’s Highlands High School has been arrested on child pornography charges.
Carl Alan Atnip, 48, was indicted by a Bexar County grand jury on Aug. 27 on 12 counts of possession of child pornography, a third-degree felony.
He was taken into custody Wednesday after a traffic stop. An officer cited Atnip for speeding and discovered that a judge had issued a warrant for his arrest on the child porn charges,
the San Antonio Police Department said.
The San Antonio Independent School District confirmed that Atnip was a teacher in the special education program at Highlands High, on the Southeast Side, from October 2021 to August 2023.
Atnip’s profile on the job listing site BeBee says he “facilitated a life skills workforce curriculum” at the high school, “which involved coordinating practical, real-world activities.”
He previously taught English at Erlin Junior High School in Taiwan, according to the job profile and social media pages. The school serves students in Changhua County in west-central Taiwan.
In a video posted on Atnip’s public YouTube page in 2015, he told viewers he moved from San Antonio to Taiwan to be closer to his wife’s family. He said he taught seventh grade English and was available for private tutoring.
Dozens more videos posted to the YouTube page between 2012 and 2015 show Atnip interacting with students at Erlin Junior High. He filmed a tour of the building and of class projects, which included a school newscast in English.
His job profile says he worked as a teacher at the Bexar County Juvenile Justice Center and at IDEA Ewing Halsell,
a public charter school on the South Side. SAISD, which provides teachers for the juvenile justice center, said it had no record that Atnip taught there.
IDEA Public Schools, a network of K-12 charter schools, said it had no record of having employed Atnip.
Atnip was booked into the Bexar County jail Wednesday. He remained in custody Thursday, having failed to post a $50,000 bond.
