Today’s Big Stories
1. Texas A&M University professors now need approval for some race and gender topics
Texas A&M University System regents on Thursday voted to require professors to receive approval from the school president to discuss some race and gender topics, tightening rules months after a viral video of a student confronting an instructor over her lessons threw the flagship campus into upheaval.
Republican lawmakers on the new Select Committee on Civil Discourse and Freedom of Speech in Higher Education credit the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk for encouraging political debate. But many felt Kirk often did so at the detriment of minority groups, resulting in divided reactions to his death.
3. Building a new hospital left one rural Texas town without a place to deliver babies
On April 14, Texas’ oldest operating rural hospital gave way to its newest. Community leaders and hospital employees gathered on a stretch of grass across from the old facility, posing with beribboned shovels as they prepared to break ground.
But behind the camera-ready smiles, the project was breaking down. Facing a budget shortfall and rising costs, the hospital board had decided to cut what had long been its costliest service. Olney’s shiny new hospital, designed to serve the region for the next 100 years, would not be able to deliver babies.
