Although it is constantly being accused of being “mid”, Houston’s Midtown continues to be a promising part of the city-if you can look past its problems and see the vision of it harnessing its vast potential to become more walkable and fun. Many of the complaints about the area have to do with what it doesn’t have (or what it used to have), like a Whole Foods or a big commercial gym like 24-hour Fitness. Now, one of those voids is finally being filled, with the news of a luxury gym opening up in the area next year.
Club Studio, a luxury gym franchise, is coming to Houston’s Midtown. The new facility is bringing its cutting-edge facilities, amenity services, and boutique classes to the area, located where the now-closed Midtown 24 once operated. There’s already a Club Fitness in the greater Houston area, with the Woodlands branch of the gym that opened in May 2024.
The incoming Midtown location will feature, of course, a standard weight room, as well as massive cycling rooms, boxing, yoga, and Pilates studios. It will also feature amenities like a spa, cryochamber, a healthy super food cafe, and more.
The gym pricing could prove a point of concern, with a standard membership coming in at around $130 and two more expensive tiers more in the price range of a Lifetime Fitness. That price point may make establishing an audience in the area a challenging task, as options in the area offer cheaper memberships; gym-minded Midtowners may opt to continue venturing out of their neighborhood to visit more popular gyms, such as one of EOS Fitness’s locations in Montrose, but that would also mean contending with terrible parking.
The market for Club Studio may be individuals who enjoy signing up for curated classes. That subset of gym-goers may find actual value in the price points because Pilates classes can be expensive. Getting unlimited classes and guest passes seems like the true sell for the gym, along with its facilities, which actually look really nice.
The old Midtown 24 wasn’t without blemishes, but it was a good gym to go to, especially for its aesthetics; working out or playing basketball and being able to see the Houston skyline was great, and in this reporter’s opinion, made it the only Houston-area 24 that warranted its elevated sports location price point.
Midtown deserves cool things. A new luxury gym may not be the coolest thing in the world, but its arrival is a sign that businesses are finally willing to invest in the area. Now, all we need is a grocery store to follow that same line of thinking.
