The man accused of shooting and killing three of his co-workers before turning the gun on himself at a Northeast business was here in the U.S. illegally, according to an ICE official.

“(The) murder suspect in triple murder/suicide shooting at a San Antonio, Texas landscaping business on Nov. 8 was an illegal alien from Honduras,” ICE said in a statement. “Jose David Hernandez Galo, 21, illegally entered the United States on April 16, 2019, as a minor, with his family unit.”

Hernandez Galo’s family was issued notices to appear before an immigration judge, but had not reported to ICE since July 2022, the statement said.

“This senseless tragedy could have been prevented,” the ICE official said, adding that the family was not considered a priority for removal under federal immigration policies in place at the time.

ICE also said illegal immigrants can now “take control of their departure” through the CBP Home App, which offers $1,000 and a free flight to self-deport voluntarily.

Around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Hernandez Galo allegedly shot and killed Selvin Chacon, 48, Sergio Chacon, 38, and Karen Bautista, 24, at a business in the 4400 block of Stahl Road, a San Antonio Police Department preliminary report stated.

Several other employees of the business ran for safety after shots rang out, police said. Officers would arrive shortly after and secure the scene.

SWAT officers and negotiators, along with the Texas Department of Public Safety, assisted in securing the area.

Hernandez Galo was later found after an hour-long manhunt. He was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office.

At the time of the shooting, SAPD chief William McManus said the incident was “not random.”

However, police have not said what led to the deadly shooting as of Wednesday.

It is also unknown how many shots Hernandez fired or what type of weapon he used.
