A house fire near Veterans Memorial High School in Corpus Christi saw quick action from CCFD, stopping the flames before they reached neighboring homes.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A house fire near Lipes Boulevard and Cornell Drive, not far from Veterans Memorial High School, sent neighbors running for safety and the Corpus Christi Fire Department rushing in after flames erupted in a backyard Sunday night.
The first property was damaged but neighboring homes were saved. No injuries were reported.
Gena Duval told 3NEWS she was having dinner at her brother’s home when she noticed a bright, orange glow fill the window.
“My sister-in-law went outside to grab a drink and she heard noises. The same time she came in, I turned my chair to look out toward the tv, which faces the window to the backyard, and there was huge, huge, huge flames. And so she was running in to tell me that the neighbors or the backyard was on fire and I saw it at the same time and so we both were like, “We gotta get out of here,” Duval said.
Her brother’s backyard sits directly behind the home that caught fire. While his house was not damaged, his shed was charred as the flames spread quickly.
Firefighters arrived within minutes and found the fire burning behind the home. Crews were able to stop the flames before they reached the house.
“Our firefighters went in and they were able to extinguish the fire, they had some reported explosions prior to us getting here. They were possibly propane tanks so we were careful and calling our control time – it took twenty minutes to have control today. But there were no injuries from the fire and there were no injuries to anyone on the scene, as well,” said CCFD Battalion Chief Scott Marsh.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by CCFD.
