Rain and a cool down

  • November 17, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Rain and more seasonable temperatures are on the way. Before those changes, however, temperatures will remain well-above average over the next three afternoons.

Today, a weather system passing north of us will generate a brisk westerly wind. At times this afternoon that breeze is likely to range from around 15 to 25 mph, with gusts near 35 mph possible. Somewhat stronger wind speeds, around 20 to 30 with gusts near 40 mph may occur over the northwestern viewing area.

The westerly breeze and full sunshine will result in high temperatures around 12 to 17 degrees above average for mid-November. For Lubbock, the average high is 63°. The record high is 88°, set on this date in 2017.

The sun, breeze, warmth, and the dry vegetation, will create a slightly elevated grassland fire danger this afternoon. Be cautious if you will be involved in outdoor activities which may involve open flames, generate extreme heat, or create sparks.

Temperatures will again peak in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees tomorrow and Wednesday.

Rain chances are improving for later in the week. It is possible rain may begin late Wednesday and linger through late Thursday. The most likely time, however, is Wednesday night through Thursday morning.
