Odom’s family and the city reflect on his legacy of faith, public service and unity.
ARLINGTON, Texas — Former Arlington Mayor Elzie Odom, the first Black mayor in the city’s history, has died at the age of 96, his family announced Monday.
Odom, born May 10, 1929, dedicated his life to service long before he made history in Arlington politics. His election as the city’s first, and still only, Black mayor marked a major milestone for Arlington and reflected the values he carried throughout his life: fairness, opportunity and unity.
He was first elected to the Arlington City Council in 1990 after serving on the Planning and Zoning Commission. Odom then served as mayor from 1997 to 2003. In 1999, the Elzie Odom Athletic Center was opened and was dedicated in his honor.
Throughout his years in office, people who worked with him often talk about his calm, thoughtful leadership. In an online tribute, the city said Odom was known for listening, finding common ground, and pushing for improvements that strengthened neighborhoods and helped shape the city’s future.
At home, he was just as admired. His wife of 78 years, Ruby Odom, shared a heartfelt tribute, describing the loss of a man who was far more than a public figure.
“Today, I lost the love of my life: my husband, my partner, and my best friend,” she said. “He was a man of faith, strength, and determination. He loved Arlington and dedicated himself to serving its people, but he loved God and his family even more. We built a life together rooted in Christ, service, and gratitude. I am comforted by the memories we shared and by the legacy he leaves — a legacy of kindness, leadership, and a belief that every person deserves dignity and respect.”
Odom is survived by his wife, their children, The Honorable Dr. Barbara Odom-Wesley and Rev. Elzie Odom Jr., and the extended Odom family.
The City of Arlington announced that flags will fly at half-staff at city facilities, and all lighted gateway monuments — including the towers at City Hall — will remain dark in solemn tribute. Arlington City Council will also hold a moment of silence at its Tuesday, Nov. 18 meeting.
During his time as mayor, Odom helped shape Arlington’s future in lasting ways.
He championed youth programs, expanded services for seniors and residents with disabilities and oversaw paying off the city’s contribution to The Ballpark in Arlington nearly 10 years early. He also helped create the voter-approved street maintenance sales tax program and later worked with city leaders to successfully bring the Dallas Cowboys to Arlington.
Odom’s family says details about a public celebration of his life will be shared soon, and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of condolences during this time of mourning.
“The family appreciates the overwhelming support and condolences received from across the Arlington community and beyond during this period of grief,” the family said in a statement.
