PINEHURST, Texas – An investigation is underway after a man who barricaded himself in a bathroom at a Montgomery County McDonald’s shot himself on Monday, authorities say.

Shooting investigation at McDonald’s

The scene unfolded at the McDonald’s located at 32323 SH-249 near Decker Prairie Road, south of Pinehurst, around 11 a.m. Monday, but the incident began earlier in the day.

Earlier that morning, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says they were called to a Magnolia cemetery for a welfare check on a man who was threatening suicide. Police say he fled into Harris County as MCSO deputies tried to detain him.

Around 11 a.m., they located the man at the McDonald’s restaurant. Deputies responded to the scene.

MCSO says the man barricaded himself in a bathroom and ultimately ended up shooting himself one time. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The sheriff’s office says the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office had previously accepted charges against the man for an incident earlier in the morning, including Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Family Violence) and Evading Arrest in a Vehicle.

What’s next:

The incident is under investigation by several agencies, including the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Rangers, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
